Marine Corps Leadership Principles for Parents

« Back to Glossary Index

Marine Corps Leadership Principles view parents as leaders of their families who are responsible for their development and wellbeing. There are lots of similarities between a well-functioning military unit and a family. Unfortunately, here are also lots of similarities between low functioning military units and a low functioning family. The Corps is a flexible organization. Marines have to fill a variety of roles on any given day given what live throws at them. Everyone is expected to know the job of the person to the left or right so they can fill in. They are also expected to have the ability and willingness to train and mentor people beneath them or act in the capacity of senior staff in their absence. Parents can learn a lot from that. I am using the Leadership Principles to supplement the Leadership and team capabilities Social Skills in the Emotional Intelligence for Parents framework.
